for the little tykes...grocery shopping

every once in a while i talk about my job. there's no good reason why i don't talk about it more. one of the biggest reasons is probably because it's hard to explain exactly what i do. i am a child development specialist in early intervention. what that means is i work with children from birth to age 3 with developmental delays and disabilities. that also means in order to work with kids who have delays in their development, i have to know a lot about typical development.
i decided to start a new series.
introducing...
FOR THE LITTLE TYKES
once a month i will post something related to child development, disabilities, behavior, etc. if there's something you want to see, please let me know.
grocery shopping isn't usually the most fun thing in the world. add kids to the task, and it usually gets worse. since we all have to eat, i bring you the first installment in the series...
GROCERY SHOPPING WITH A TODDLER
when kids are bored, they act out. grocery shopping can be boring so kids often act out. one of the simplest ways to avoid the boredom meltdowns is give your toddler a job (shopping list)

yes, i realize this means extra work for you, but it will pay off in the end.

1. make a list of several foods (5-10) you buy almost every time you go to the store.
2. cut out those items from the ads or print from the computer.
3. glue, tape, etc to the child's shopping list
4. laminate (or use clear contact paper or packing tape) the shopping list
5. while at the store, have the child get the food off the shelf, put in the cart, and mark off their list with a dry erase marker or simple sticker.

now your child is actively involved in shopping and will have less time to meltdown. let me know if you try it.
how do you handle shopping with your little ones?

  1. My brother and I loved it when my Mom would tell us a few items and we had to go find it in the store. We were allowed to go off by ourselves and I don't ever remember us grossly misbehaving when we were alone. Now I see kids running around like wild animals at stores and it unnerves me. Totally not the kids fault in my eyes. Definitely the parents. I went off on a tangent here. I really just meant to say I loved doing this and love this idea. And even though I don't have kids I might have to make myself a laminated picture list ;-)

  5. Such a good idea! My bigs are too old for this now...although maybe it would help the middle man focus a little instead of trying to swing from the shelves and run marathons around the store. Looking forward to this series!!

  6. Genius! I usually have two well behaved buys when I go shopping, but lately my 4 1/2 year old has been asking for things not on the list and getting quite upset. This will be a great idea for him to choose his lunches and snacks from what I lie him to have, but yet he will still feel like he has some control over it,
